Exciting news from the LEO Zoological Conservation Center
in Greenwich, Connecticut!
In the early morning hours of March 22, Petal, a 6-year-old endangered Rothschild giraffe, began labor. At 9:04 am she gave birth to this healthy female calf who was standing and nursing within 30 minutes.
Her name, Sandy Hope, was chosen from nearly 7,000 public submissions to the LEO Center to bring power and strength to the people affected by the Sandy Hook tragedy.
This Rothschild giraffe is classified as endangered with fewer than 670 left in the world.
She’s the first one born at this non-profit sanctuary founded by Marcella Leone
to save endangered animals and their habitats.
