Attention anyone about to walk down the aisle!
Be sure to tune in to this episode addressing estate planning on The Women’s Eye podcast with Stacey Gualandi. I talk about how to plan your estate and the importance of organizing and protecting all your “stuff” before the wedding date. Certified estate planner Catherine Scrivano, founder of CASCO Financial Group in Phoenix, Arizona shares her tips on what you need to do.
“If you own any stuff, you have an estate. Getting married means that you are subject to the laws of the state in which you live. So, you’re really looking at a lot of possible consequences and saying, ‘How do I want things to go in the event that any of these things happen?’”

Catherine Scrivano is our “Building Money Power” contributor for The Women’s Eye podcast. She says besides asking yourself, “Is this the right person to marry?” we have to assess the “consequences” of entering a marriage contract.
While it doesn’t sound romantic, this is some of what Catherine advises on how to plan your estate before you say “I Do”:
- “Take a quick inventory of the things that you own and are bringing into this marriage independently. Then it’s best to start thinking about what you want to have happen to those things should you pass away or become incapacitated.”
- “A critical part of a relationship is open communication. We have so many issues with power around money, so this could very well be a conversation that triggers finding out some things about your intended that you wouldn’t have found out otherwise.”
- “You’re going to want to talk to a legal professional to draft any documents. We do not draft documents. I’m a certified estate planner. I’m great at raising issues, asking questions, making suggestions, but we always turn to a legal professional to actually create any documents.”
- “There are agreements called ‘post-nuptial’ agreements where you’re stating your preference in the event of death, disability and divorce. That can be done after the marriage has already taken place.”
