Widowhood can happen at any time, but how prepared are we emotionally and financially when losing a spouse?
On this episode of the Women’s Eye Podcast with host Stacey Gualandi, financial planner Catherine Scrivano tackles the tough topic of financial readiness in the event of widowhood.
Available also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube
With the right resources, structure and information, Scrivano says women can and will move from uncertainty to a clear strategy after facing a loss.
“As you’re thinking through this, one way to think about it is if I passed away yesterday or if I lost my spouse yesterday, what tools would be helpful today to make it less terrible. Because it didn’t happen, you’re not quite as engaged in the sadness. You could be a little bit more pragmatic.”

One important subject Catherine emphasizes is that lack of preparation and information can make the process much harder. You must know the tools you are going to need to get through it.
Face it, we all have an expiration date, and know that others have gone through it and do come out the other side. You have to go into it with the attitude that you will persevere,” said Scrivano.

Catherine wants to caution everyone not to make any big decisions during this time, because she says, “You’re not in your best logical mind.”
She gives helpful information about:
- How to acknowledge where you are emotionally and financially
- Keeping track of spending
- Who to listen to or take advice from on your financial situation
- How support groups can help
- The timeline of making decisions
