I almost got scammed recently by someone who called me on my cellphone “representing” my bank. Fortunately, my spidey senses activated and I confronted the caller, who then promptly hung up.
“Awareness is half the battle. In the situations that I’ve heard of, I don’t think there’s ever been a time when someone doesn’t say, ‘You know, I thought something was off,’ but ignored their intuition. One very common thread is that people are embarrassed and ashamed that they fell for it. That doesn’t point out that my clients are not intelligent, smart, capable people. It points out how good these scammers are. They’re incredibly precise.”

As our resident financial expert and contributor to The Women’s Eye Podcast for our signature Building Money Power series, Catherine says the key to a good defense is having an effective system in place. Scammers have a superpower: they weaponize urgency, authority, fear, and isolation. Awareness is the first line of defense.
“We’re just in a battle, and we’re determined to have everybody armed and dangerous,” says Catherine. “The one scam that is very interesting to me, and frankly frightens me the most, is how they are capturing our voices through a variety of communications.
You and I right now talking are giving the bad guys an opportunity to capture and edit our voices in a way that could make my voice available to call my loved ones to say, ‘I’m in jail; I desperately need your help; I need you to send money,’ and it is my voice.”
