TWE Talk: Beth Friedman on WOMEN A.R.E.’s Inaugural Summit

By Stacey Gualandi (@StaceyGualandi)/November 5, 2013

When I covered the first Salon for a new women’s networking group called WOMEN A.R.E. earlier this year, I was confident that co-founders Angella Nazarian and Beth Friedman were going to be empowering women everywhere. Through their efforts, they bring together influential leaders to help create positive change on important issues that effect women worldwide.

Their first successful year is culminating in an Inaugural Summit on November 7 in Beverly Hills, CA. In this “intimate forum” for 300 women (which is already sold out), those attending will be able to connect with 25 prominent CEOs, entrepreneurs, artists and philanthropists. Sharon Stone is receiving their Trailblazer Award for her ceaseless dedication to charitable work.

I spoke with Beth Friedman just days before the big event to find out what’s in store for these lucky women attending the Summit. I only wish I could be there, but she assured me that there will be more gatherings like this in the future.

It’s not everyday a 15-year-old girl is honored for her wisdom, courage and “soaring spirit.” But Claire Wineland is unlike any typical teenage girl.

This high school student, artist and budding comedian has cystic fibrosis, or CF. Because she was born with it, she says she doesn’t know what it’s like not to have it. She’s endured countless health problems in her short life, including almost thirty surgeries.

“CF is a ripple effect disease. Mucus builds up in your lungs and goes everywhere and that causes cysts, which cause bacteria and that messes with your immune system, and then organs start to shut down. I have diabetes, chronic bowel obstruction, asthma…all these other things because of CF,” says Claire.

Yet through it all, she has maintained a positive attitude and outlook far beyond her years. Three years ago, she almost died after a routine surgery led to lung failure.  For two weeks she was in an induced coma but miraculously survived.  She is now oxygen-dependent but says the experience gave her a new perspective on life.

Claire Wineland's book, "Every Breath I Take"“My whole theory on life is that humans adapt but we underestimate our power to adapt to any situation,” she says. “There are two ways you can handle a challenge or adversity: you can either clamp down or you can open up, and I’ve had the opportunity to open up on many occasions.”

In just the last few years, Claire has written a book about living with CF called Every Breath I Take; she has countless YouTube videos; and she started a foundation to help other kids like her living with the disease called Claire’s Place.

Claire says her ongoing curiosity about our life’s purpose is what leads her to do these things. I had the opportunity to meet Claire when the Looking Beyond organization recognized her efforts with the “Soaring Spirit Award” at their 14th Annual Fundraising Luncheon held recently at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Co-founder Angella Nazarian says since it started, Looking Beyond has raised over two million dollars for local hospitals and programs that benefit disabled children’s needs.

She added that “after seeing Claire speak, I was so impressed by her level of wisdom, I knew she was the perfect person to honor this year.”

After a tear-filled introduction, actress, model and activist Molly Sims presented the award to Claire in front of a sold-out crowd of 450.

As a new mom and someone who works closely with children’s charities around the globe, Molly says Claire really touched her. “I wanted to meet her and ask her if she was still happy after everything she’s been through and struggled with.  I hope her message to other 15-year-olds is that this is what I’ve done with my life, what can you do with your life?”

No one is more proud of how Claire is surviving and thriving than her mother, Melissa. “She just came straight from the hospital to be here. This kind of event really drives her to share her story. She was given a little bit of a gift along with this illness to touch people and to remind them what’s important. She doesn’t get it from me; she was just born that way.”

For Claire, it was the first of what will be many more awards to come and yet another opportunity to tell her story and share what she’s learned.

“I’m honored. It’s fun because it means that what I’m saying really matters to people,” she says.

As for Claire’s future, she will be exploring a possible lung transplant. But you can guarantee that won’t stop her from giving back. Is she proud of what she’s accomplished? Claire says, “I have moments where I feel I’m proud of my life and what I’ve done. I feel it’s a life well-lived.”

Star-Studded Event Honoring Somaly Mam Launches Women A.R.E.

Heavy rain, snarled traffic and car accidents on Sunset Boulevard couldn’t keep almost 200 of Los Angeles’ most respected and top female leaders from attending the launch of Women A.R.E. in Beverly Hills last Friday.

Jane Fonda, Daryl Hannah and AnnaLynne McCord were just a few of the influential women who gathered for an intimate and rare conversation with CNN Hero Somaly Mam, a former Cambodian sex slave who is at the forefront of efforts to end human trafficking.

This is the first such event for Women A.R.E., founded just a few months ago by author and motivational speaker Angella Nazarian, and Beth Friedman, social entrepreneur and tireless education advocate in Los Angeles. Their mission is to “aspire, respond, and engage,” and after hearing from many of the women in attendance, these forward-thinking founders did just that.

I was honored to attend this Salon, one of several planned for 2013.  Ms. Nazarian was a recent guest of mine on our TWE radio show; I met Somaly Mam at a 2011 Los Angeles event for her Foundation; and Jane Fonda has been featured many times on this site, so this event was tailor-made for The Women’s Eye.

According to Friedman, who opened up her beautiful private residence for this launch, Women A.R.E. was “a year in the making.” She and Nazarian were looking for their “Act Two” and wanted to use their collective resources in an effective way to promote and foster new ideas when it comes to entrepreneurship, work-life issues, and health and wellness.

Nazarian said Somaly Mam is an important person because she “unleashed a movement on a global platform.” She has forged a transformative path – from life as a young girl in a brothel to a woman who now rescues other young girls from a life of slavery – with courage and love.

“Today, in my heart, I’m a happy woman,” said a humble Somaly. She has achieved that through forgiveness and the love she shares and receives with the 7000 girls she has saved. But the statistics are daunting. Every minute, two girls are sold into slavery across the globe.

In just the time that all of these women came together, 240 girls had been sold. However, Somaly remains steadfast in her commitment to educating and empowering these young women despite the challenges.

If the success of this first event is any indication, Nazarian and Friedman can feel confident about their plans for the 2013 Women A.R. E. Conference set for November 2013.   And you can be sure, The Women’s Eye will be there.
