Yes, another year has come to a rapid end, and it’s time once again for The Women’s Eye to reflect and move forward. We’ve had the opportunity to interview an amazing array of inspiring and thoughtful people both for the site and our radio show, and we thank them all.

They had fascinating observations on their state and the state of the world. We thought we’d share some of their words of wisdom as we begin 2012. And here’s a big thank you to all the folks who visited our site this past year… [Read more…]

Hooray For Hollywood’s Dining For Women Chapter

Dining for Women--Hollywood Chapter

By Stacey Gualandi

Great group of gals. Check. Perfect potluck portions. Check. Dozens of donations. Check.

When I set out to start the first Hollywood, CA, Chapter of Dining for Women on February 23rd, I expected these key ingredients would make for a fun evening.

After all, in a profile in EYE last month, DFW founder Marsha Wallace said “collective giving” was such a simple concept: invite women to a potluck and money saved by “dining in” is in turn donated to a designated charity each month. But I never knew just how rewarding, inspiring and enriching this evening would be.

Dining for Women

A reunion of former working buddies...

I am pleased to report that 22 fabulous women from all walks of life arrived at my two bedroom condo in the heart of Hollywood to reunite with old friends and to meet new ones. It was a perfect blend of ladies who all “got it”, the idea of meeting, greeting, reminiscing, sharing…not only to help feed our soul (and stomachs!), but also to aid women in other parts of the world.

February’s DFW designated program featured PINCC, Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer, an organization that funds cervical cancer screenings for women in under-developed areas. Our efforts, combined with donations from over 200 Dining chapters, will go a long way to help prevent this cancer among women living in El Salvador.

Of course, it wouldn’t have been a potluck without plenty of food! We chose a sustainable, El Salvadoran theme to tempt our tastebuds. My guests brought homemade or store-bought dishes like a healthy quinoa salad, crunchy kale and broccoli, pupusas, plantains, crudite, fruit, and the piece de la resistance–Whole Foods’ Veggie Pizza!!!

Every month’s gathering will focus on a different charitable program. I am fully committed and hope to share this experience not only with my friends, but also with soon-to-be friends. Its all about changing the world…one dinner at a time!

The evening of course never would have ever materialized, if not for the opportunity to write for EYE. For more information on how you can join Dining for Women, email Stacey at thewomenseye@gmail.com

Marsha Wallace On How Dining For Women Wants to Feed the World

UPDATE May 20, 2013: Dining for Women will celebrate it’s 10th Anniversary–Their Decade of Dreams–June 21-23–in Greenville, South Carolina.

While meditating in 2002, Marsha Wallace had a vision: “What if every month you meet with your gal pals, you take the money that you would normally spend at a bar or restaurant, and then donate that money to help poverty-stricken women and girls half way around the world?”

“I do believe if you ask you will receive. We’re best when we’re living with purpose.” Marsha Wallace

Sounds like a simple concept right? Well, that inspired idea became DINING FOR WOMEN, Marsha’s organization that now boasts over 200 chapters in the U.S. and in three countries, and has raised over $946,000 for 48 charities in developing nations.

EYE Contributor Stacey Gualandi confesses cooking is not her thing, but dining out with friends is. And she was looking for a fun way to make a difference. So she connected in more ways than one when she spoke to Marsha.

Her passion, enthusiasm, and initiative was so compelling, Stacey will be starting the first DFW chapter in Hollywood, CA, in February… [Read more…]
