NEW INTERVIEW WITH HOST STACEY GUALANDI!

A BRAND NEW conversation on The Women’s Eye Radio with host Stacey Gualandi and Doniece Sandoval, founder of Lava Mae, which brings showers and dignity to the homeless.

We first profiled Doniece and her organization for The Women’s Eye in 2014; now she is one of several women who are featured in the newly released “20 Women Changemakers: Taking Action Around the World.”

After observing an overwhelming number of homeless individuals in San Francisco who were stripped of their dignity without a simple daily shower, Doniece launched Lava Mae almost five years ago, by retrofitting buses into mobile showers. This “radical hospitality” has been transformative in improving services for those less fortunate and changing the face of homelessness in San Francisco.

Her approach to solving an overwhelming problem is catching on in a big way across the country. Lava Mae has branched out to Los Angeles, now offers “Pop-Up Care Villages,” and shows others how to follow her lead with BUILDIT toolkits.

Doniece shares why she went a whole week without showering, who are the people Lava Mae serves, how we can all spread this service to other communities and what it feels like to be called a “superhero” by her daughter.

We are also thrilled to announce that on October 7th, Doniece will be included in a panel including Stacey, as well as author and moderator Laurie McAndish King, at  Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA, as part of the launch of “20 Women Changemakers: Taking Action Around the World.”

Doniece Sandoval Makes a Difference in the Lives of the Homeless
with the Mobile Showers of Lava Mae

We like to feature photos of some of the TWE women who come up with inspiring solutions to social problems. Doniece Sandoval is just that person as you’ll see in our TWE interview.

She came up with the idea of outfitting a bus with mobile showers
when she saw the lack of facilities for the underserved in San Francisco.

 As Doniece told TWE,
“If you can put gourmet food on wheels and take it anywhere, why not showers and toilets.”

Just take a look at her “A Pair of Pants” blog on Lava Mae. It shines the light on a day in the life of  Lava Mae  and the complexities that the organization faces.

Homelessness is a major concern and complex issue in a growing number of cities around the world. Like many I have donated clothes and given money to agencies and organizations. San Francisco’s Doniece Sandoval went much further and came up with a way to bring dignity to the homeless, “one shower at a time.”

“I thought if you can put gourmet food on wheels and take it anywhere, why not showers and toilets? So, the idea for Lava Mae was born!”  Doniece Sandoval

She’s done it by retrofitting a bus and naming it Lava Mae, a twist on Spanish for “wash me.” Doniece does not purport to end homelessness, but rather to make a small but significant difference in the lives of the overlooked.

I was inspired after speaking with  Doniece to find out about her motivation and how Lava Mae came to be. I think you will be too!…  [Read more…]
