NEW INTERVIEW WITH HOST STACEY GUALANDI!

Be sure to tune in to Stacey’s BRAND NEW interview for The Women’s Eye Radio with Tina Hovsepian (@TinaHovsepian), the inventor of Cardborigami, origami-inspired homeless shelters!

Seeing a need to combat the ever-present homeless problem in Los Angeles, this full-time architect created a solution: a collapsible, transportable cardboard shelter.

In just seven years, it’s the invention that keeps on giving. In addition to helping people get off the streets and back on their feet, Cardboragami shelters are now being used to help those impacted by natural disasters, most recently in Mexico following the devastating earthquake.

Today is the United Nations International Day of the Girl Child and the publication date of an inspiring new book, Wonder Girls: Changing our World by award-winning documentary photographer and author, Paola Gianturco.

There are many concerns about the well-being of young girls around the world. They are often victims of child marriages, domestic violence and trafficking, and they are denied an education and equality.

But Paola, during her travels documenting changemaker women and grandmothers around the globe, became aware of young activist girls who are banding together to fight these cultural threats, and they are succeeding.

Paola, along with her co-author and 11-year-old granddaughter, Alex Sangster, interviewed 102 girls and created Wonder Girls the first book to document the work of these activist girls. I grabbed some precious time to interview Paola on TWE Radio to learn more about these activist girls and the work of her amazing young co-author and granddaughter, Alex… [Read more…]

NEW INTERVIEW WITH HOST STACEY GUALANDI!

A BRAND NEW conversation on The Women’s Eye Radio with host Stacey Gualandi and Doniece Sandoval, founder of Lava Mae, which brings showers and dignity to the homeless.

After observing an overwhelming number of homeless individuals in San Francisco who were stripped of their dignity without a simple daily shower, Doniece launched Lava Mae almost five years ago, by retrofitting buses into mobile showers. This “radical hospitality” has been transformative in improving services for those less fortunate and changing the face of homelessness in San Francisco.

Her approach to solving an overwhelming problem is catching on in a big way across the country. Lava Mae has branched out to Los Angeles, now offers “Pop-Up Care Villages,” and shows others how to follow her lead with BUILDIT toolkits.

Doniece shares why she went a whole week without showering, who are the people Lava Mae serves, how we can all spread this service to other communities and what it feels like to be called a “superhero” by her daughter.

We are also thrilled to announce that on October 7th, Doniece will be included in a panel including Stacey, as well as author and moderator Laurie McAndish King, at  Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA, as part of the launch of “20 Women Changemakers: Taking Action Around the World.”

NEW INTERVIEW WITH HOST STACEY GUALANDI!

Stacey has a BRAND NEW interview for The Women’s Eye Radio with Laurie McAndish King, the award-winning author of the just released “Your Crocodile Has Arrived: More Stories from a Curious Traveler.”

Never one to pass up a challenge somewhere around the world, Laurie has been a little busy since last we profiled her three years ago with her debut, “Lost, Kidnapped, Eaten Alive: True Stories From a Curious Traveler.” Not only is she an accomplished author and essayist for numerous publications, Laurie has also contributed over a dozen stories for The Women’s Eye site.

In her first book, she wrote about surviving an accidental marriage to a Maasai warrior in Kenya, coffee made from animal poop in Bali, and a kidnapping in Tunisia. Now she shares the inspiration for her newest memoir: meeting 20-foot earthworms in Australia.

You’ll hear more fascinating tales about “alien spaceship propulsion,” chocolate massages, saving orphaned elephants in Sri Lanka, and, of course, near-extinct giant earthworms.

Laurie gives advice on what to write about, why she hates traveling and what’s on her bucket list. And we’re excited that on October 7th (7pm) at Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA, Laurie will be moderating a panel including Stacey, as well as Lava Mae founder Doniece Sandoval, as part of the launch of “20 Women Changemakers: Taking Action Around the World.”

But don’t worry; she won’t be serving earthworms.

Stacey catches up with Jane, one of our featured 20 WOMEN CHANGEMAKERS, to give us an update on her caregiving journey and mission to help people who find themselves caring for a loved one and needing advice.

Jane decided to write this unique survival guide when she was faced with her chronically ill spouse’s ongoing medical condition and saw how little information was available.

She calls the ever-increasing need for support a “silver tsunami.” Her book continues to be a bible for people confronting the challenges, stresses and strain of caregiving for loved ones.
