Don’t miss this new episode of The Women’s Eye Podcast with Stacey Gualandi as I talk with Alenka Vrecek, the adventure-seeking author of She Rides: Chasing Dreams Across California and Mexico.
This one-time Lake Tahoe ski instructor grew up in Slovenia, in the shadow of the Julian Alps, with a yearning to “explore and push boundaries.”
“My motto always has been keep dreaming,” says Alenka. “When you stop dreaming, you stop living.”
The just-released She Rides is an extraordinary account of Alenka’s 2,500-mile solo journey on a mountain bike (aptly named “The Beast”). This breast cancer survivor has written a deeply personal memoir about pursuing her lifelong dream to “ride my bike to the end of the earth.”
Alenka’s gutsy, goal-oriented trek truly hit home for me as I had just completed my own dream of hiking the Rim to River Trail in the Grand Canyon following a couple of rough personal months. A small group of us (#teamvegas!) set out on the South Rim at 3:30 AM; hiked 20 miles over 14+ hours–with a high of 98-degrees near the bottom–and climbed over 6,000 feet. Talk about a beast!
While it clearly pales in comparison to a 2,500-mile bike adventure, it was the most brutal physical challenge I’ve ever faced. But I can’t tell you how rewarding it was for all of us at the end!
Be sure to listen or watch my chat with Alenka Vrecek to find out why she wrote this book, whether anyone can do it and how the arduous journey took her mind off her emotional pain, allowing her to be in the moment. There’s no quit in Alenka. Wail ’til you hear where she hopes to ride to next!
“I thought by sharing my experiences, I could inspire people to go follow their own dreams and to just get out and keep on moving!”
