Don’t miss this important episode about retirement planning on The Women’s Eye podcast with Stacey Gualandi! I discuss the unique retirement challenges women face while preparing for “financial independence” with financial advisor Catherine Scrivano of CASCO Financial Group in Phoenix, Arizona.
“One of the retirement challenges is that [women] have longer lifespans. Generally, we outlive our male counterparts. At the same time, statistically, we earn less throughout our lifetimes. So chances are very good that we’re going to have to make less money last longer. –Catherine Scrivano

Catherine Scrivano is also a regular contributor to The Women’s Eye podcast for our Building Money Power series. She says retirement planning can be fun, but women especially need a reality check.
At my age, I’m not ready for full-on retirement. I don’t think I could ever work full time again, yet I also don’t ever see myself not working, so I need to begin defining what retirement looks like to me.

During our interview, Catherine outlines several necessary steps to take when starting to think about building future financial independence.
- Picture the ideal retirement and how you are going to spend your time. Then back into that with what will it cost to be able to do it.
- Take other people into consideration. Do you have a partner and do you need to talk with anyone else about your idea of retirement?
- Think about things like lifestyle. Do you want to travel? If you have a partner, does that person have the same concept of how to spend leisure time?
- Be realistic about health care expenses and the potential for long term care. Women tend to have more health issues later in life.
